The M/Y THUNDER CHILD II, an XSV20 model developed by Safehaven Marine, is a remarkable high-speed offshore patrol, search and rescue (SAR) interceptor, and cruiser. Launched in early 2019, this 23-meter (75-foot) vessel is engineered for exceptional performance and seakeeping in challenging conditions, embodying a fusion of innovative hull design and robust construction.

The XSV20's hull design is a patented innovation that seamlessly integrates a twin-stepped asymmetrical catamaran hull form with a wave-piercing monohull. This hybrid approach delivers the dynamic transverse stability and rough-weather capabilities of a catamaran, combined with the superior head-sea performance of a deep V monohull. Extensive research and development, including tank testing of 12 scale model variants, optimized its hydrodynamic characteristics.

Constructed with a military-spec composite hull, the THUNDER CHILD II utilizes a combination of carbon fiber, Kevlar, and vinylester resin. This robust build ensures durability and strength, particularly in its superstructure, which features 25mm ballistic glass for the front windows, designed to withstand significant wave impacts .

THUNDER CHILD II is fitted with quad Caterpillar C8.7 654hp engines, coupled to quad France Helices surface drives. This configuration provided redundancy and allowed the vessel to maintain planing speed even if one engine failed. The vessel boasts an impressive maximum speed of 54 knots and a cruising speed of 35-40 knots. Its 11,000-liter fuel capacity provides a range of 750-800 nautical miles at cruising speed. A unique fuel transfer system, including a 2,000-liter forward ballast tank, allows for adjustment of the longitudinal center of gravity (LCG) to optimize performance in varying sea conditions.

A key feature enhancing the THUNDER CHILD II's performance is its integral hydrofoil system, designed by Hyuscraft. Positioned between the asymmetrical catamaran hulls, this system lifts the hull by 400mm at speeds above 30 knots. This reduces wetted area, significantly improving efficiency and fuel economy at higher cruising speeds. The hydrofoil also effectively dampens pitching and overall hull motions, contributing to superior seakeeping.

The interior of the THUNDER CHILD II is designed for both practicality and comfort, accommodating a crew of 5 and offering berths for passengers. It features a 'glass helm' with a comprehensive suite of electronic navigation equipment, including four Simrad 19-inch monitors, radar, GPS Chart plotting, VHF, forward-looking sonar, and a FLIR thermal night vision camera. A dedicated engineer's station allows for monitoring of engines and CCTV.

Survivability is a paramount aspect of the THUNDER CHILD II's design. It incorporates multiple watertight compartments and is built to commercial standards for safety and engineering. The vessel is also self-righting, ensuring it can recover from capsize in extreme conditions.

THUNDER CHILD II has demonstrated its capabilities through several record-breaking voyages, with 9 verified records to her name. Notably, it established an offshore world speed record from Ireland to Iceland in under 32 hours, covering approximately 1500km. It has also set a new over 50ft class Cork to the Fastnet Rock and back UIM World powerboat record.
