Description

1987 Custom 50′ Trawler Biloxi Lugger

One trip to Master boat builder Bill Holland’s shop and you will immediately know that he built and expertly restored some of the most unique and high end wood boats on the Gulf Coast. Bill hand picked every single piece of wood that went into his boats, and he traveled across the country to find the very best mills. For many years, he advised the Coast Guard’s head of wood boat inspections, and built his boats so that they can be inspected for multi-passengers for hire. Bill built the “Wine Down” formerly “Mama Doll” as his personal boat, with all the knowledge, features and design that a lifetime of building custom wood boats brings to the table. She is built from double sawn Cypress framing, Juniper planking, and fastened with 316 grade stainless steel planking nails and framing bolts. It is not very often that a boat of this style and caliber comes on the market. The cost to build new is prohibitive, so an opportunity for such a boat is rare.

“Wine Down” is a trawler, but is a specific style and layout known along the Gulf Coast as a Biloxi Lugger. She is comfortable and safe on long passages over open water, but her roots are in the barrier islands of the Gulf Coast. The Chandeleur Islands are the most famous of these. This bird sanctuary has been in place long before humans, and it is teeming with redfish, trout and flounder. The nearby Biloxi Marsh is a fisherman and duck hunters paradise. These Biloxi Luggers are motherships for fishing skiffs that are carried on the roof or daisy chained in tow. The hull was built to commercial charter standards, but has been a private boat her whole life. Her layout is perfect for large families, a group of friends, or a charter business. She is a seaworthy vessel that is given the upmost love, care and attention. Her paint and varnished handrails shine, her engine and systems runs perfectly, and she is a pleasure to look upon.

This Biloxi Lugger has a comfortable interior, with sleeping accommodations for 8-10 guests. A functional galley, well placed aft, features a separate ice maker (needs service/repair) in addition to the refrigerator/freezer, oven, coffee maker, microwave, sink and storage. A large varnished table provides the perfect setting for memorable meals. Going down into the forward cabin, there are (6) single berths and (2) double berths. A full, separate shower is to starboard, and a separate head is to port. There is a Raritan Electro Scan waste system set up so that the boat is legal when traveling through pristine waters such as in the Florida Keys. Another important feature for preventing environmental fines is an oil/water separator for the bilge water.

You wont be worrying about leaks on this wood boat, she is exceptionally tight, and the owner tells me that the bilge comes on only from the shaft gland, right where it is supposed to leak! There are high capacity bilge pumps as well as high water bilge alarms and pumps for peace of mind. A Detroit 8-71 with keel cooling and dry stack exhaust provide extremely reliable power and low maintenance. 15kw Yanmar generator. Single lever gear and throttle control. Hydraulic steering system for ease of operation replaced in 2012. On board entertainment comes through satellite TV through a KVH TracVision unit, HD TV, BlueRay player and a Jensen AM/FM/CD player with interior and exterior speakers. A full suite of quality electronic equipment makes this boat ready for any adventure: Furuno Autopilot (new 2012), Furuno NavNet Radar/Chart, (2) Icom VHFs, (1) Uniden VHF, Furuno FCV-667 color fishfinder, Interphase forward looking sonar.

Air Conditioning comes from a marine unit for the salon, and a recently replaced roof top Dometic unit for the forward sleeping area. Dual 12v and 110v electrical systems provide redundancy for almost all systems, including lighting and pressure water systems. Hot and cold water on the aft deck sink, as well as salt and fresh water washdowns on deck and on the top deck for washing skiffs. A hydraulic engine pump powers the davit for raising and lowering skiffs, and roof racks can be easily modified for many types of flats skiff, dingy, or duck boat. She carries 900 gallons of fuel in two stainless tanks and burns no more than 9gph with the generator running, at 9kts and 1600 rpm. (1) 12’ Twin Vee skiff with electric start 15hp Yamaha outboard included!
