The Monterey 400 Sport Yacht (called the 415 SY in 2015) was designed from the ground up for Volvo’s IPS pod-drive propulsion system. Pod drives were the future when the 400 Sport Yacht was being developed; their performance and handling advantages over conventional inboard power have been game- changers for the industry. The Monterey’s two-stateroom, two- head interior is notable—many express boats this size have a single head. With her luxurious cherry wood trim, synthetic wood flooring, posh Ultraleather seating, and designer furnishings, the accommodations aboard the 400 SY are the equal of the best European imports. The single berths in the aft midcabin easily convert to a double with a filler, and a home theater system with flat-screen TV is standard in the salon. In the cockpit, a unique foldout table deploys from the aft portside lounge providing an alternative to the belowdeck dinette on warm summer evenings. A hardtop, cockpit wet bar, and windlass were standard. Engine access is as good as it gets in a boat of this type. Joystick controls make low-speed control easy. Cruise at 26–28 knots (35 top) with
370hp Volvo IPS diesels.
